18-rated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 becomes biggest entertainment launch in history
Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has sold 6.5 million copies in the UK and US during its first 24 hours on sale. This figure makes it the most successful entertainment launch of all time, beating all day-one records in gaming, movie and music sales.
The 18-rated first person shooter was released on Tuesday November 8, making just under £250 million in sales. In comparison, last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops, the previous record-holder, made just under £225 million in its first day.
Game retailers across the country opened doors at midnight to sell the title, with Canterbury's own GAME and gamestation stores doing the same.
Modern Warfare 3 has been met with much controversy in the run up to launch, featuring one level with a London underground battle that ends with a tube crash. Players then witness an explosion in the city centre killing a young girl and her parents.
The franchise is also known for its expansive multiplayer modes. Call of Duty: Black Ops has appeared at the top of the Xbox 360 console's most played games list since its launch and Modern Warfare 3 looks to do the same.
